Fish Tacos – San Diego’s unofficial mascot, the fish taco, is said to have originated in 1983 by Ralph Rubio, co-founder of the fast-casual Mexican chain Rubio’s. While on a spring break trip to San Felipe on the Baja Peninsula in 1974, Rubio discovered the simple yet delicious taco from his favorite vendor (rumored to be Taqueria Adriana), and jotted down the list of ingredients. He held onto the recipe for seven years before opening his first restaurant in Mission Beach. Today, the fish taco can be found in various forms throughout the city, from a gourmet version at Galaxy Taco to the popular TJ Oyster Bar in Bonita and the Mariscos Nine Seas food truck in South Park.

Crack Shack – After achieving fame on Top Chef and Top Chef All-Stars, Richard Blais set his sights on creating a restaurant empire with the Pacific Ocean as his backdrop. His first venture, Juniper & Ivy, opened in 2014, featuring “left coast cookery” known for dishes such as beef tartare and the visually appealing yodel dessert. Following the success of Juniper & Ivy, Blais launched Crack Shack, a popular fast-casual eatery that specializes in chicken and egg dishes, including a two-handed fried chicken sandwich. The chain has since expanded to Encinitas, Orange County, L.A., and Las Vegas, consistently drawing long lines of eager customers.

California Burritos – In San Diego, burritos are a beloved staple whether you’re looking to refuel after a surf session or enjoy a sunset at Windansea Beach. For an authentic local experience, ordering a California burrito is a must. The origins of this San Diego specialty are hotly debated, with some attributing its creation to Roberto’s. Regardless, the components remain consistent: carne asada, guacamole, cheese, and French fries wrapped in a flour tortilla. If you’re seeking a unique twist, Lolita’s is renowned for their carne asada fries, a heap of crispy French fries topped with carne asada, guacamole, sour cream, and cheddar and cotija cheeses. Along with the classic California burrito, Lolita’s has become a go-to spot for locals and visitors alike.

Stone Brewing – San Diego boasts more than 150 breweries, brewpubs, and tasting rooms, but few have enjoyed the meteoric success of Stone Brewing Co. Since its launch in 1996, Stone has become known for its bold, hoppy beers and sprawling Escondido location, complete with a one-acre beer garden, a large patio, and a food menu highlighting local and organic ingredients. In addition to a second location in San Diego’s Liberty Station featuring a bocce court and summer movie nights, Stone has expanded globally, with its beers available in Asia, Europe, Australia, and beyond. Despite its international reach, Stone remains deeply rooted in San Diego, collaborating with local business White Labs, a yeast producer that consults with many breweries, including Stone.

Border X Brewing – San Diego’s only 100% Latino-owned brewery, Border X Brewing, infuses a Mexican twist into their craft beers. Situated in Barrio Logan, the heart of Chicano culture in the city, Border X stands out with its unique Mexican-inspired brews, such as the Horchata Golden Stout, Abuelita’s Chocolate Stout, and the Blood Saison. Along with their innovative beers, Border X hosts a range of events, including Taco Tuesday, cupcake and craft beer pairings, and lotería nights, making it a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike.
